OMI to participate in COP 29 to boost emissions reduction in shipping

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will participate in the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29), to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024, with the aim of promoting its zero net emissions strategy for shipping. Leading the IMO delegation will be secretary-general Arsenio Dominguez, who will present progress on greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in the sector.

The 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which brings together world leaders and approximately 40,000 delegates from governments, civil society and the private sector, will address strategies to combat climate change. The IMO plans to highlight the importance of cooperation with sectors such as energy and finance, as well as cargo owners, in the context of shipping´s role in the transition to clean and sustainable energy.

Outcome of the Marine Environment Protection Committee

At the 82nd session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82), held in September and October 2024, Member States discussed possible mid-range GHG emission reduction measures. Discussions included an emissions pricing mechanism and fuel standards, culminating in a legal draft known as the ‘IMO Net Zero Emissions Framework’. This framework is expected to be formally adopted in 2025, with implementation expected in 2027.

Side event

In addition to the scheduled bilateral meetings and sessions, IMO, in conjunction with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), will hold a side event on 20 November. This session, entitled ‘Decarbonising transport: policies and strategies for aviation, maritime and land transport’, will focus on sharing approaches and policies to advance emission reductions in these sectors.
